Charlotte Bronte speaks for me
I found my copy of Jane Eyre for Lauren to look at. It's very old; inscribed "To the best sister a chap could have."
It was a gift to my grandmother from her brother. It must be about eighty years old.
There's a preface from the author and I usually skip those, but this bit caught my eye.
"I turn to another class [...] in whose eyes whatever is unusual is wrong: whose ears detect in each protest against bigotry--that parent of crime--an insult to piety, that regent of God on earth. I would suggest to such doubters certain obvious distinctions; I would remind them of certain simple truths.
Conventionality is not morality. Self-righteousness is not religion. To attack the first is not to assail the last."
