Web Page help

Before I leap in and ruin years of work, I thought I'd ask for tips since my f-list is full of people who know more about everything than anyone else (true fact).

I have all my fanfic at www.janedavitt.com but I don't update it now, just archive at AO3. My pro writing page, which I do update and gets most traffic is an off-shoot of it, www.janedavitt.com/fiction.html.

I want to swap them over. I'm fine with renaming the fanfic page something else entirely, like www.janedavitt.com/fanfic.html but I want the simple janedavitt.com url for my pro writing.

How do I do it so that people with bookmarks don't get frustrated and how do I do it at all?

My thoughts are to open up the main page of each site and simply resave as whatever I want. So I'd open janedavitt.com, save as something or other, then open fiction.html and save as janedavitt.com.

That would put things in the right place, but a zillion bookmarks would need altering so I guess I'd redirect the url or something?

Meep. Scared! Suggestions? Thoughts?

I think the easiest fix would be to take your current index.html page (your fanfic intro page) and rename it fanfic.html. Add a small link somewhere on your profic intro page for "Looking for the fanfic?" Duplicate your profic intro page and name it index.html. Upload. Anyone coming straight to janedavitt.com or using a bookmark for fiction.html will find your profic intro. Anyone looking for your fanfic will have to click the extra link, but I think most people use AO3 these days.

While there was a lot to love about many personal sites (including recs to other fics), I love AO3 because it's readable. I used to regularly remove the fonts and backgrounds from sites because so many of them were unreadable. Now there's no need. Yay!

OMG, AO3 is the best! Legibility, searchability, and DOWNLOADS! Synecdochic very generously saved me space on Kekkai to make my own pages, but I didn't get around to it. Now I'm so glad AO3 is just there. <3

hi Jane,

just a couple of things. first, the default page of any website is always index.html, so that's what you need to name the page you want to appear when someone types in www.janedavitt.com. second, you can't have a webpage which is both a redirect page and a readable page, so you'd need to set up two pages for each site, one a redirect page and the other the page you want people to be redirected to. which kind of complicates things because then you're stuck with that format, when you want to simplify things.

maybe the best solution is to change the pages so your pro fic is index.html and the fanfic is fanfic.html, then put a link at the top of the index.html page with something like: "Looking for my fanfic?" (with clickable link) and on the fiction.html page you can set up a redirect to index.html, with a reminder for people to change their bookmarks.

anyway, go to get off to work, so if you have any questions, i'll answer them when i get back. or maybe someone else can suggest a better way to do what you want.
