I'm now at 74,000 words which means it's no longer a case of needing to hit a word target because there's no way it'll finish short (80,000 is more than long enough for your average paperback book and this will be more like ninety I'm guessing) and more a case of needing to finish the, you know, actual story.

So suddenly I'm on the downward slope, heading for home and a hot bath, not struggling up the mountain -- but looked at another way the finish line is now shrouded in mist.

I wrote some before bed, and when David got back from soccer he asked how it was going.

ME: I did over 2,000 words today!

D: Good!

ME: No. They started arguing.

D (has heard this all before): Don't they always do that? Don't you LIKE it when they do that?

ME: No! It came out of nowhere! It's really bad! And then the lawyer came out of her office and she was supposed to be youngish and stunning and blonde and she was older and gray-haired and frumpy but awesome. HOW DID THAT HAPPEN?

D: (puzzled) I don't know, you're the one writing it. You did it.

ME: NO, NO, I DIDN'T. BLONDE! YOUNG! HAD IT ALL PLANNED OUT! IT'S NOT MY FAULT.

LOLOL! Literally. I remember the same feeling in "Moving Forward" when Blair got mad at Jim's letter. No! He was supposed to forgive and make up!

Here's wishing you more compliant characters.

I remember getting stuck on a Gargoyles story and realizing the problem was Elisa really wanted to shag Xanatos. And I went, "NO! I ship Elisa/Goliath; what is this Elisa/Xanatos nonsense?" But apparently, in that particular story Elisa and Goliath just wanted to be friends.

you know, it's heartening to know that i'm not the only one who reads over what i've written and goes "WAIT! WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?!" b/c the characters just kind of... went off.

but YAY for home stretch!
