This is an AU version of Daniel's visit to Jack's house in 'Shades of Grey' prompted by, of all things, Sam's canonical reaction to Jack retiring in S7.
It's not tidy and neat and clear-cut. That, for once, was deliberate, and dictated by the circumstances. And this has taken ages to write for a 2,600 word fic; it's been tweaked and pruned and now I'm done.
