A lot of things around the kitchen were pine (spice rack, chopping board, bread bin...) and they don't go with the new cupboards. In a spirit of economy and a rare moment of craft-iness (not craftiness :-)) I recalled that we had some wood stain in the cupboard from years ago and decided to get adventurous with the kitchen paper roll holder.
Not like that. Shut up.
So I stained it golden oak; too light.
Stained it cherry; still not there.
Had a light bulb moment and painted it (three coats) with the wall paint, a buttery orange. Looked lovely; fresh, pretty, perfect match.
Put it back in the kitchen, stepped back, a proud smile on my face, and --
-- from a distance it looks pretty much like a pine kitchen towel holder.
See? (ignore the wall; we're tiling it this weekend).
