For the last seven years we've just had the freezer in the fridge/freezer; not a bad size but pitifully inadequate when you have guests and when almost everything your children eat is frozen. With double house guests coming at Christmas, I've been agitating for a small chest freezer to put in the basement so that, for once, we can buy the turkey before Dec 23.

It's all fallen on deaf ears, even when opening the freezer door brought a cascading shower of orange bits off fish fingers (why orange breadcrumbs? Fish aren't - mostly - orange. Why not...::fails to think of alternative:: Orange it is.) or someone walking by and stepping too heavily meant the door popped open and we don't notice for hours which can't have been good.

But, last week, the vodka bottle made a wild bid for freedom (foiled! Ha!) and that was that.

So we have a cute little freezer! 7 cubic feet, a little basket... Steve, our friend with a Suburban, went with David to collect it and we plugged it in and waited. Then we went down and ceremoniously put in a tray of water and the next day it was ice cubes!

So we emptied the old freezer, threw away assorted unrecognisable lumps of...stuff, and put some things in the basement one.

The door now shuts with a satisfying clunk and the vodka is safe.

Well. From falling out. Not from being drunk.
