Busy editing the 60K fic I've been co-writing, coming soon(ish) to two or three LJs near you, but I stopped to watch some vids.
They were SGA vids and as I've only seen the first four episodes of S1 (we're watching one a night with David mildly interested but slightly critical; I'm giggling a lot at bits and enjoying it with an impartial appreciation of the pretty and no vested interest in a single 'ship as yet although I can see the attraction of Sheppard/McKay and Sheppard/Ford without needing to try very hard) most of the footage is new to me.
What got me thinking was if this is a huge advantage as a vid viewer or not. I can't quite decide. On the one hand, I'm not able to appreciate the significance of that particular look, that hand on shoulder, that explosion that's special because it was a bittersweet victory.
On the other hand, I'm not able to appreciate the signifcance yadda, yadda -- which means I'm attaching no baggage to it; I'm seeing it purely in terms of what the vidder told me to expect in the summary or what I'm getting from the song and the juxtaposition of images/lyrics. Untainted appreciation. Because I know from Buffy/Angel vids, where I do know the source of every single frame and could give you chapter and verse on it, that there's sometimes a moment when I think, 'Yes, fine, but Giles isn't looking at Xander then, he's looking at ...' or, 'Hang on; that's a deeply tragic bit; what the hell's it doing here in a funny vid even if Spike is grinning?'.
I can't decide which way is best but I'm looking forward to re-watching all these SG-1 and SGA vids when I do know the significance and seeing if it changes anything.
The other thing that struck me was when I was reading about SG-1/SGA pairings at
ship_manifesto. It's really odd to read utterly convincing and plausible interpretations of canon that show X loves Y and then read a second, equally persuasive essay proving that X loves Z. Moments from the same episode, hell, the same scene, being used to highlight two different subtextual relationships.
But they can't both/all be right, can they?
Yes. They can. Because none of them are, so all of them are. All the uncanonical relationships are equally possible and can exist simultaneously. Someone write me an equation to prove it ::g::
God, I love fanfic ::pets it::
And speaking of love, I've been having a whale of a time posting anon love all over the place in
luna_k's post. The having to convince the computer I'm real has thrown me once or twice (a zero is not an o; who knew?) but it's still amazing fun. And thank you to all who commented under my quavering signature; you all made me blush and squee and grin widely :;smooches:; And to whoever it was who wanted to lick my Xander icon (and who can blame you?) it's by the delectable, talented
