Happy Birthday [livejournal.com profile] pukajen and [livejournal.com profile] kitty_poker1! Wishing you both the very best and sparkliest of birthdays, filled with fun ::much love::

I just cleared out my bedside table as part of the ongoing, a room a day project (losing steam but hanging on in there; it's more like a cupboard a day now). Along with many old letters, crayon drawings from the girls and such, I found a printed off email (I didn't trust computers to save stuff back in 1998; as I've had about three major meltdowns and lost everything since then, I was probably wiser then than I am now).

It's an email I sent to Avon publishers, dated 17 Dec 1988. They were running a competition on their website; they started off a short mystery story and you had to finish it briefly and send in your go. The characters were Judith and Renie from Mary Daheim's Bed and Breakfast murder series, which I'd read and enjoyed.

It's three sides of A4; a few thousand words, I guess, and wow. I always say I started writing in 2002, so this kind of makes that a lie, I suppose.

It's not brilliant (I couldn't punctuate dialogue AT ALL) but it's sort of sweet :;pets it::

And no, I didn't win. In fact, no one did; I kept checking, but the winners were never published and I think they stopped doing it or something ::shrugs::

It ends with the immortal line:

"I can't face munching my topper; will this do instead?"

;-)
