Honeycrisp apples remind me of Crunchies.

Lauren's eighth birthday party is coming up and we're going with doing it at home and having a Rainbow Fairies theme (millions of the books out there; sets of seven, the Weather Fairies, the Sporty fairies, Jewel Fairies, Music Fairies, etc.)

So we're ignoring indigo (I'm so sorry, [livejournal.com profile] jenlev! But stuff just doesn't come in that color...) and having five guests plus L. Each will be assigned a color and be that fairy for the party and we'll do some games. One is shamelessly borrowed from our friends who did it for our girls at Christmas; each child has a strand of wool to follow to a prize. Easy? Not when it's miles long and looped/interwoven into a web the size of the room. I bought six cheap balls of wool in the requisite colors, leis (in the colors) for them to wear to show who they are, and the string will lead to the book itself which can be one of their take home gifts.

Got a rainbow colored pinata in the shape of a butterfly which is vaguely fairy like what with the wings (cunning way to stealthily shuffle some of the upcoming Halloween candy out of the house) and we'll do our usual blowing up a zillion balloons in all the colors too.

Whew!

Mum says it's snowing hard in England; we have none yet, but it's forecast. I went out to buy a new winter coat as mine is ancient and the inside of the pockets has shredded. The world is still smiling on me; not only is the exchange rate brilliant for cashing US checks, but gas was down to 93.1 a liter (six weeks ago it was 1.35) and the Liz Claiborne coat I got was marked way down but I didn't know until I got to the counter, so it was a nice surprise.

Then the world reminded me it's an imperfect place and as I staggered out of the mall, heavily laden, I lost the car. I'd come out of the wrong door at Sears and the car just was not there. It took me a minute to assimilate that as I tried to frantically retrace my steps and remember what department I'd seen as I first walked in.

Turned out, it was around the corner, but as I rounded it, the wind whipped at me (so fierce today!) and caught the butterfly pinata I was carrying loose to save a bag, and I nearly took off.

Home now, safe, sound, windblown.
