Two episodes into the new season and, fresh from rewatching early S1 with my mum, who loved the four episodes she got to see, I'm baffled by the changes.
I know that slashers are often accused of resenting female characters getting between their boys but I don't really slash the three men on this show, I just like the twisted, often problematic, dynamic they have going on and the two new characters aren't adding anything positive to that mix, in fact they're diluting it.
This show, for me, always had a James Bond, larger than life goofiness about it, smattered with some hefty dollops of angst. I loved that they reminded us last night that Chance used to be a killer, a human weapon before he literally switched places and became the target. I loved the parking lot chase (though I didn't get why, in the science lab, they didn't just grab the guy right there; he was unarmed and on the floor; why run from him?)
I'm ambiguous about not telling the wife about her husband; she's not a child and all that money in the Cayman bank needs to be sent back to the family of the banker. I think. To be honest, I got totally lost with that sub-plot. Husband came up with money-making scheme, yes, but why was he blackmailing the banker? And really, if the banker had him killed via Chance, I don't say I agree with it, but I can see why he did it.
And that almost makes the banker a victim (almost), so having him tied up, tortured by our guys and then shot is a bit...yeah.
Moving on to the two new characters. I loved Winston needing a manual to handle the tech, heheheh. These fancy new NCIS LA type computers are super cool but I'd need a training course, for sure. I don't love the loss of that comfortable, dusty, shabby space. This isn't a posh, glossy business; Chance is under the radar. Mrs Pucci will be taking out ads next. And she needs to back off. She said she wouldn't get involved, just bankroll them and er, sure as hell looked like she was getting involved -- and in the way -- last night. I was waiting for Winston to tell her to take her money and her tanks and don't let the door hit you on the way out. Doesn't she have a huge charitable organization to run?
Ames, the thief. Oh God ::bangs head on desk:: Oh my God, get her the hell away. Guerrero showed incredible restraint in not shooting her. He's lost his glasses in a meatgrinder? Okay, that was funny in a disturbing way, but he couldn't pick up an interim pair from any drugstore just to tide him over until he could get new ones made? The clumsy device of needing her to drive him was just that. The way she continually interfered was teeth-grittingly annoying, Guerrero's capitulation at the end too easy.
Anyway, label me a disgruntled woman-character hating slasher, but I liked it better in S1.
And bring back the old music, sheesh!

as for the thief, she's just plain annoying and reminds me (not in a good way) of the PI in Outlaw - annoying, interfering and... okay, i'm going to stop now, because it really seems like the majority of shows are no better at writing decent female characters than they ever were. the fact that there's *more* female characters (apart from providing work for the actresses) is not an improvement when they're just as crappily written as they ever were.
