...to all my fellow Canadians.
We always get together with some friends who, like us are from Britain. We've known each other for decades from the England days and of the three couples, two are related by marriage so it's very much like a family get-together. Sadly, Shan, Steve's wife flies out to the States for a yoga training course so she won't be here, but there'll be eight of us counting the kids and I'm sure it'll be fun.
The weather is still freakishly hot. It's like summer here, high 80s, cloudless sky, balmy breezes.
Menu; we spent most of yesterday doing prep work so today should be fairly relaxed :;crosses fingers::
We're starting with appetizer spoons because there was a set on sale at Zehrs and after years of watching Top Chef, I couldn't resist. They'll be filled with a mix of Greek yoghurt, green apples, and smoked salmon with a spot of olive oil. If you do it, don't add salt as the recipe suggests; doesn't need it. We're not adding the roe either.
Then it's butternut squash soup, with a hint of chipotle. We just made that ourselves; soup doesn't really need a recipe.
Followed by (David says it's pretentious but the soup is spicy and we test drove it yesterday and it works) a quickly washed appetizer spoon filled with key lime sorbet as a palate cleanser. I want to get my use out of the spoons :-) We didn't make the sorbet...
Then it's onto the turkey which we got free at Sobeys if we spent $100 which was very easy to do.
With that we're having
Port Roasted Onions with Cranberries and Rosemary the rosemary from the garden.
Roasted beets, carrots, turnips
Roasted potatoes
Peas
Asparagus
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Brussels Sprouts with crumbled bacon
Red cabbage
Pan gravy
Stuffing
Most of the above is using stuff up in the fridge :-)
Dessert is store bought Key Lime Pie for the kids and a dense chocolate cake for us that took a while to make but looks really elegant, though it's very thin.
Dark Chocolate Whiskey Cake
We had to make the icing twice; adding the butter just didn't work. We left it out and just melted the chocolate and whiskey then added some cream instead to make a ganache.
Then it's a cheeseboard.
Then we do the wafer-thin mint pop, I think.
I always over-achieve when I'm hostessing....

Hubby decided to make a pumpkin pie completely from scratch - even bought 2 small pumpkins and baked them and scooped out the flesh for the filling.....I'm telling you I was totally skeptical but it was oh sooo wonderfully good by the time it arrived at the table! YUM!!
Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving - not sure where you are in Canada but we had the most amazing 4 days this year in Southeastern Ontario - so hot and so beautiful - Indian Summer came a little late this year but it was so worth the wait!
