I was checking out some children's books on Amazon for Lauren and the Kindle versions are 91 cents more than the paperbacks.

Okay, that's not much, but...why? No paper, no delivery costs, no ink... The cost of editing is the same for both and can be split, so can the cover art. I guess there could be an additional charge for the formatting but even so.

Weird. I expect the e-books to be cheaper, not more.

And while I'm moaning, why the hell can't Amazon.ca have Kindle books of its own? Or the wide range of goods that Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk has? We're not exactly a tiny country that's hard to get to. And why, when our dollars are pretty much equal, do our books cost so much more than the US ones?

Humph.

My icon's reminded me that Richard Burgi is on Chuck again tonight. I feel more cheery.

Tax? VAT is why British e-books cost more than paperbacks...

(And hi! Found you through DW's "latest posts" page, so hey there.)

my guess is the market (i.e. the sellers). in NZ book prices have always been high. when i was in my teens it was blamed on high import taxes and the cost of shipping. then the import taxes were removed in favour of a standard 10% tax on all goods. but the price of books didn't go down. now we can buy e-books, which don't have to be imported or have any shipping costs and most of them are the exact same price as the hard copy books, or only slightly less, and we're told that the cost of e-books isn't in the printing or shipping. how very convenient.

luckily, Amazon now sells Kindle in NZ and so also allows us to buy from the US website.

Mostly because those publishers aren't comfortable with the ebook market and worry that if they keep prices low there, their hardcopy sales will suffer (more) and that's what they use for their projections. They're still calculating that they'd rather sell one ebook at $10 than three ebooks at $5, but they'd be okay selling one paperback at $9. Plus, they're still thinking three years ago for pricing the readers and making assumptions on disposable incomes.

amazon's been selling paperbacks at a loss for a while now - I guess the ebook market finally caught up?
