You know a bit ago I was complaining about e-book pricing because one of L's books was cheaper as a paperback and people gave links and we read about it and eh, okay, lots going on behind the scenes?

I'm back to being outraged again.

Kobo sent me an email promising 60% off selected books (it's Cyber Monday, apparently. I did not know that we had a new holiday.)

Despite the fact that my Kobo is leaking at the seams, it has so many unread books on it, I went to investigate.

I clicked on the 'mystery' section of the 1000 books covered by the offer and whee, Barbara Hambly vampire/mysteries! Own them all in pb, of course, but it would be nice to have them on...HOW MUCH?

'Those Who Hunt the Night' is 19.99 marked down to 12.39.

'Predators I Have Known' by Alan Dean Foster? 27.99 down to 17.39.

They're all like that.

Are they freaking kidding me? What?

The 60% off price is extortionate, never mind the original.

I sent Kobo a terse email.

OMG, it is 1.99 on Amazon!! Sheesh, Kobo.

Holy shit! I'm glad I mostly use iPad for other things and reading fanfic. (AO3's download options are AWESOME.) The used bookstore will be getting my paperback money for a long time if those are the e-prices.

Kobo is awful about their markups and selling epub at hardback price (which is exactly what they did above). Kobo's readers will, however, do just fine with epub from most anywhere else, and Calibre is a glorious thing.

Gah. That's just...offensive. I'll confess that while I'd love finding an alternative to Amazon, we keep coming back to them because of ease and the fact they often have the best price. I'd prefer not to have everything in one basket but since the husband and I are both reading on our iPads, being able to easily pull from the same library is nice. But Calbre is my friend (especially to backup the copy of LotR for Kindle we bought this weekend).
