We went out for dinner, came back in time to bundle kids to bed, have baths, watch Wonderfalls, go to bed at 10.30, exhausted and so I didn't get chance to check my list for hours. You know, I'm missing stuff. If I go back to skip 40 and refresh, I get a different page sometimes, posts I would never have seen. Missing posts. Eep. Time to panic.
Not many people seem to be talking about Wonderfalls. I persuaded David to watch, but he wasn't keen initially. He asked what it was about. I said, 'It's by Tim Minear. From Angel and Firefly. We have to watch.' He gave me a long, level look and said, 'But what's it about?'
? I just told him...oh. O.K. 'A girl works in a gift shop on the American side of the Falls and things, toys and stuff, start talking to her so she can help people.'
He sniffed and muttered about it not sounding his thing, hadn't it been done before, sounded really naff.
I fixed him with a glare and began to recite, 'There's this sixteen year old blonde girl who kills vampires...'
So we settled down to watch, me conscious that sitting behind me was a lump of determined to disapprove from the start, walk out after the credits, shaped like my husband.
Heh. Got us both hooked from word one. Loved it. The way it was presented was so misleading. It's more like Malcom in the Middle than Touched by an Angel (not that I've ever watched the latter so maybe not a good one to pick). It's got that shoving people into engines unexpectedness to it, it's violent, smutty and surreal - well, not really the first two, but yes, in a way it is.
Hard to pin down. But I laughed out loud a lot.If the essential lack of much happening doesn't pall, I think it's got a good chance. It's got me watching anyway. And some of the effects were really good. The coin splosshing into the water bit appealed to me.
The only problem I had was that as I sat there waiting for it to start, I had to watch a bit of a reality show. I don't do them. I don't get them. This one was so awful I watched for five minutes unable to believe the awfulness of it. It was called 'Playing it Straight' and it was offensive. I only started to watch because I thought the presenter was the annoying woman from House Doctor. Not sure if it was or not, but I couldn't stick around to find out. Vomit inducing.
