Major step not there moment; I used a word, Word red-lined it, and I frowned, looked it up in Merriam-Webster; not there. Looked it up in my faithful Oxford Concise; not there.

So how come I know it, know its definition, and think it exists? What madness is this?

I guess I misread another word years ago and got it confused, but it's so strange.

The word is 'abtruse' and I thought it meant, oh, a very specialized, or archaic, confusing,little-known word or phrase.

Which is ironic under the circumstances :-)

Okay, before I posted, I decided to google it and I'm NOT making things up; it is a word that means what I thought

http://www.wordnik.com/words/abtruse

Still wondering why it's not in the dictionary though...

And I suppose this post now has no point, but I've written it so I'm posting it ;-)

ETA again.

Apologies to the dictionary and thank you to [personal profile] etrangerici; I was spelling it wrong. It's abstruse.

I'm such a dork :;facepalm::

I think it's abstruse, isn't it? I've had that same thing happen to me, though I cannot remember what the word was.

I'd guessed it was probably abstruse you wanted (though it's a word I know, I've never been sure of the meaning or ever used it) but I got distracted by looking up the Wordnik page and forget to reply. Glad someone else did reply! :-)

But it's odd that Wordnik did have 'abtruse' defined, without giving the proper spelling!
