I teared up hearing of his death.

What he and his fellow astronauts did seems to be as remote as the Mayflower journey. I still remember my daughters snickering disbelievingly as young children when I pointed at the moon and said we'd walked on it.

We went and then we turned our back on it. I grew up reading science fiction. I wanted desperately to go into space, influenced by Heinlein's juveniles.

I thought my children, or maybe my grandchildren would live in a world where the human race had spread out a little.

That seems so unlikely now, but briefly, for a while, we tried.

Thank you for taking that step, Mr. Armstrong.

Your post is what made me look at the news. He was such an inspiration, and did such amazing things for science and for us as people striving to learn and grow.

I have a feeling we'd better get off the planet or we'll die with it. :/ Don't give up hope for space yet, okay?
