Went to Toronto for the night yesterday and stopped by Oakville to show E's grandparents her digs. Went down to the lake (Lake Ontario) and wow. It was incredibly cold; minus 20 and more, and though there was no wind, the waves were huge and a fog filled the air. The waves rolling in were mostly made of chunks of ice, some fist-sized, some boulders and watching them smash against the shore was spectacular in a scary way.

I wonder if Lake Michigan will be looking that way in a couple of days.

But I won't be going downtown to see. Brr! :-D

Since writing that comment I read that it is expected to freeze over, which will serve to make the rest of the winter around here colder. Dammit.

Minus 20, whether Celsius or Fahrenheit, is WAAAYYY too cold for me. I used to be a hardy New England girl, but have since become a disgrace to my forebears by adapting to the practically perfect weather of Southern California. These photos look positively chilling (in every sense of the word)!

Recently I came across a story about houses destroyed by an ice 'tsunami' that was caused by chunks of melting ice on a lake driven ashore by a strong wind. Definitely scary, and your photos are adding to the 'scary' quality.

My one unalterable criterion when looking for a house was to get one high enough that it was unlikely to be affected by flooding, including storm surges, though at the time I hadn't heard of 'surges' of ice.
