It's not often I spit out food, but I left the table and did just that after my first taste of hallom cheese. David had tried it in the UK and then we spotted it here and decided to try the garlic herb version. It's cheese you can barbecue without it melting.

Kind of rubbery. And when you chew it, it squeaks.

It was the oddest sensation and I really was not a fan.

I have to admit, I really like halloumi (what I've seen it as - not sure whether it's right or not. Possible a dialect thing?) - it's sort of like paneer (Indian "farmer's" cheese) - not much in itself, but good to cook with, because it's doesn't melt if it's seared first.

We use it in curry as a meat substitute sometimes.

(And when I eat it and it squeaks, it makes me laugh. Which makes other people (mostly the husband) laugh. Which makes me happy... Little things...)
