Not the husband or the kids? Well, I'll get to them but the books take up more space so let's not overlook them.
I own a lot of books. People comment. Probably because you walk through the front door and a double door size arch way on the left reveals my library. A room with nothing in it but books, a comfy armchair and a table. Technically. It's now got a child gate across it as Lauren ripped the spine off a 1920 Wodehouse (sob) so Eleanor and the children I mind go in there to do puzzles and colour in peace without Lauren being able to get at what they're doing. This means it's littered with toys. There are three usable walls and they each have six shelves, ten feet long on them. Sadly, they're full and the basement has had to be used and now I'm out of space on the bookcases down there and I hate double stacking...
I've been collecting books since I was a babe in arms and I still have most of my Enid Blyton's. I love reading in much the same way that a fish loves water. I'm also lucky in that I volunteer at the local library and get first dibs on the book sale books before they get put out so I haul home bags full of paperbacks and try to cram them in. My Spike at the library story, 'A Fairy Tale Ending' was dreamed up during one volunteer session.
They're in subjects; mystery, general, SF and children's and they're in alpha order and if it's a series, they're in numerical order and wanna say anything about that? I've got nearly 4000; if I didn't do something with them, I'd never be able to find the one I wanted.
I grow weary of people saying; "My, what a lot of books! Have you read them all?" I haven't actually; some belong to David (about twenty)and our tastes don't always overlap.Mostly but not always. Thankfully he's a booklover too. I couldn't have married anyone who wasn't. He sometimes says I have too many books but I know he doesn't mean it. Insanity is so unattractive in a man.
I don't get people who don't read. One volunteer at the local library was chatting to me and I asked her what she read, thinking we might share a common love of an author. She looked at me as if I'd asked her if she picked her nose in public and said flatly, "I don't read. Ever." I edged my chair away in case it was catching and smiled uneasily.
I can have a bath and brush my teeth without ever putting down my book...oh well. Takes all sorts.
I never used to be able to read on the computer; couldn't adapt to it with the scrolling and the eye strain. Thousands of fanfics later, I realise I seem to have got the hang of it. I'll never give up books but I've expanded my horizons a little.
