Was there a significance, beyond the fashionable, about those rather stunning diamond earrings some of the men were wearing in both ears at the Oscars?

And, yes, I'm still bitter and miffed about BBM not winning the best picture.

I had to mute it several times because I cringe when people are making the speeches and getting all emotional, or going past their allotted time. Lauren Bacall had me wincing with pity, the lady who tripped and slid (forget her name but she carried it off well) got an agonised whimper of sympathetic fellow feeling. And actors who can't memorise a few lines and need an auto-cue... well. It looks so damn fake; don't they get them in advance so that they can practise?

I went to sleep composing my own acceptance speech (not sure for what; adapting a book? I suppose it'd have to be...) which was pithy, endearing, and short, even though I know damn well I'd freeze, crack up, and be led gently from the stage and chucked out of a handy side-door.

Okay, back to writing more of the Jack/Paul, interspersed with editing when I get stuck.

And I love this icon :;points:: by [livejournal.com profile] brandinsbabe. Daniel lounging gracefully, one might even say seductively, at Jack's feet... oh, my, yes... It's vaguely Maxfield Parrish-ish.
Here's the next section of this story. It's around 4,200 words and for once, the Way Back When section is the shortest as it introduces a much longer part and I wanted to keep them separate.

It's been a while so to recap:

Now: S9, Paul is on his way back home.

Then: S7, Paul's arrived at the cabin where Jack's recuperating.

Way Back When: S5, this part set during 48 Hours.

Part Five
This is what we had on Saturday and as it was nice, I'm sharing. We used brandy as Calvados was way too expensive to buy for one recipe...

It's from the Autumn 2001 Food and Drink magazine, given away by the LCBO.

Four chicken breasts, skinless, boneless

salt/pepper

quarter cup/50ml of butter

2 Spy apples peeled and sliced

1 teaspoon of chopped fresh thyme

half a cup/125 ml of dry white wine

half a cup/ 125 ml of whipping cream

2 tablespoons/ 25 ml Calvados

Season chicken with salt and pepper

Heat half of butter in skillet. Add thyme/apples, saute for about 5 mins until apples are soft. Remove apples, add rest of butter.

Add chicken and saute for three minutes on each side, until golden. Add wine, bring to boil, reduce until 25 ml remains.

Add cream/Calvados, simmer 2 mins until just thickened and chicken is cooked. Stir in apples and serve.
Set after 'Need' with Daniel fighting his addiction.

Backsliding Away

"Why would it be so bad?"

Daniel's voice loses its sullen whine and turns persuasive. Jack stares down and locks his hands together, bone against flesh.

"I'd lose part of me; is that what you're worried about? Jack..." Daniel laughs, desperately cheerful. "It could be the part that makes me a pain in your ass; ever think about that?"

"Not how it works."

"It might!"

"You're not going back."

Daniel starts to cry, crawling into Jack's lap as if he belongs there.

He does, always did, but he wouldn't have done that before.

"Get better," Jack murmurs. "Stay."
