I just had my second piece of (very kind) feedback for the Ten Green Bottles story I posted last week that pointed out, quite correctly, that Budweiser, the beer mentioned in the fic, comes in brown bottles not green, which I know as I've drunk a fair bit of it (Bud was consider ultra cool in my drinking crowd in Newcastle-under-Lyme when I was about 20; we all drank it; don't ask me why.)
It then dawned on me, after questioning Eleanor, that the song I grew up warbling on every car journey since birth isn't known on this side of the pond so a lot of you were probably thinking that I'm got it wrong and just didn't say (:;hugs:; those who did say, like
maaaaa because hey, if it'd been a genuine mix-up, I want to know these things).
'Ten Green Bottles' is a song. It can start at any number of bottles you want and you just keep singing until you get to the immortal line
'There'll be no more bottles, hanging on the wall'
The Wiki entry says that 'sitting on the wall' is the most common version, but it was ALWAYS hanging for me and I just asked David and he agrees, so maybe, as we grew up in the north of England/Midlands, it's a regional thing?
The verse is this:
Ten green bottles hanging on the wall,
Ten green bottles hanging on the wall,
And if one green bottle should accidentally fall,
There'll be nine green bottles hanging on the wall.
And then the next verse is 'nine green bottles' and you can see where it's going, right? The idea in the fic was that the beer drunk was knocking down the secrets and evasions until nothing was left but the truth.
It's a salutary lesson in not assuming a reference works for everyone.
And now that damn song is stuck in my head...
ETA The wonderful
gillyp tracked down some kiddies singing it.

It's about as good as that song gets :-)
