Color me shocked

I was watching Top Chef with David last night and my jaw dropped when not one, but two of the guest judges put their knives in their mouths and ate off them.

What? You just don't DO that! God knows I read at the table with an elbow propped on it, so I'm not one to talk, but eating off your knife? There's a good reason that's an etiquette no-no; you could cut yourself.

I was spluttering and pointing at the screen and totally aghast. It looked so damn uncouth.

ETA I realize that I'm being insular here and I do apologize. It's just that this was a formal dinner at the CIA and the two people involved were American and French so I couldn't see any reason at all for them to be eating off their knives.
