Woke up to discover that we could get onto some net pages but not others, which felt weirdly like part of my body being asleep. Canadian pages seems to load fine but not US ones. LJ wouldn't work, but Dreamwidth loaded instantly.

I Googled and saw lots of Twitter comments on the subject; anyone know what it is?

David says there's a giant solar flare happening/coming that can knock out satellites (he builds them and puts them up there, so it's a point of interest ;-))

ETA I'm getting email delivered with any comments you make to the cross-posted LJ post, but I can't see or reply to them. DW still loading fine. It really does seem to be that anything Canadian will load, nothing else.

This is freaky!
Still having problems so I called Rogers (their page loaded partially which was no help).

The man I got through to after an 8 minute wait suggested I try through IE not Firefox; no joy. Then he said, 'let's reboot; turn off all your modems'

I have five boxes conected to my computer, all lined up, router, hard drives, stuff like that. I said, 'Sure, hang on' put the phone down and started pulling out cables. Then I picked the phone up and found out that one of them was the phone jack which goes into the modem for some reason.

Bye bye, support guy.

::facepalm::
This is making me realize the depth of my addiction even as I grind my teeth in frustration(I can get Dreamwidth but not LJ, my English publisher's site but not the Guardian; WHY? I'd get it if we couldn't access the net at all but how can some bits work (email is fine) and other bits not?)

I thought, oh, well, at least I can get lots done without the distraction that is the shiny internet, but although I'm doing well with my flood charity fic and I've even done some housework, I keep needing the net AND IT'S NOT THERE. I wanted to check about ACL injuries for the fic; nope. I wanted to make those Starbucks ginger cookies -- oh, actually, I might've posted that recipe on DW/LJ so maybe I can get that. Hmm. Cookies would definitely help.

Anyway, I admit it. Without the net I'm lost. I'm getting comments via emails from you all and I can't answer them :;frets::

Be prepared for me to whine a lot until this gets fixed. I suppose I should ring Rogers, the cable company again, but I might let David do that. He knows what wires and cables go where. I freeze and stammer. The man asked what my operating system was and I went '...' until he started listing 'XP, Vista, Windows 7' at which point my brain started working again. They always make me feel totally thick and clueless, the kind of customer the tech support people mock on their coffee breaks.

I can go on LJ, I can see any site I want, I can answer comments!

It just came back without warning so I guess it was a solar flare. It's as good an explanation as any.

::hugs you all so very tight::

Thank you for the symapthy, the helpful suggestions and soothing the panicky Jane beast :-)
