My friend, who knows I read this author and write slash, lent me the latest Donna Andres, 'We'll Always Have Parrots'. She writes light murder fics; funny, wacky, dead person's always mean and is killed for a reason so slight as to be baffling, but they're entertaining and the heroine's likeable.
This one's set at an SF con for a TV show called 'Porfiria, Queen of the Jungle' and you could find quite a few parallels with 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' if you looked, though it's not intended, I think.
Half way through, there's a scene with the actors sitting around reading 'fan fic' and snerking (to do them justice, it's badfic rather than fanfic) and then freaking slightly when they realise the one they've chosen is slash.
I got to the bit where they explain to the baffled police man what 'fan fic' and 'slash' are and felt a creeping sense of familiarity...
(Walker and Maggie are actors, Foley is the policeman.)
"Slash is fan fic that tales two characters from the show who would absolutely not be involved," Walker said,"and puts them in a ... romantic relationship."
"Usually two male characters," Maggie said, "and for 'romantic' substitute 'erotic.' But apart from that, yeah."
"So this isn't anything horrific," Foley said. "For some reason, I got the idea it might be something like a snuff film. Or something drug related."
"Nothing like that," I said.
"Just fan fic written by gay fans," Foley said.
"No, usually by women," Maggie said. "God knows why: if I see an actor I like, I fantasise about seeing him with me, not with another guy. The name comes from the slash sign used to punctuate it."
You don't say.
Just once, I'd like to read a book set at a con that didn't make fans seem weird. I don't feel weird. You all seem perfectly sane and nice. And don't they realise if I wrote fic about Giles/Jane Davitt I'd be writing a bloody Mary Sue? ::broods sadly::
Speaking of names, I sometimes wonder what I would've chosen if I hadn't gone with my own name when I set this LJ up. I did it because it's the name I've always written under and I thought no one would know it was me if I picked another one, but really, it wasn't very imaginative of me. I had a similar problem thinking up a character name when I played D&D.
Suppose it's too late to change now, but just out of interest, if you were picking an LJ name for me, what would it be? They say such a lot about a person and when you see mine, it's saying nothing but, 'Jane is so boring she can't think of a cute name, my God, what must her fics be like then? ::runs away::'
ETA And, yes, tell me where yours is from if you like, because that always fascinates me; so many reasons and they're always interesting. Sometimes I can guess, but not always.
;-)
