Polar bears, oh my

It's done! And, truly, Eleanor did most of it. So, for all those who were indulgent with my squeeing, here's the polar bear diorama and thank you very much to all who offered help, especially knitmeapony. We're still fine-tuning the leaping fish, but, though they don't show up on the photo, we have snowflakes dangling from threads from the roof, so we have some 'movement' as you suggested ::hugs::. Need more snow but it keeps falling off the back wall...

Heh; we found an awesome recording of a polar bear howling but David, despite being an engineer, refused to work up some way we could incorporate that in, maybe with a button you could press to start a tape. I don't know. Some parents just don't support their kids, y'know? ;-)

Hello Janedavitt,

I am helping my daughter (2nd grade) with a polar bear artic project. Could you tell me in more detail how did you make the water. You said bubble wrap painted white glue mixed with pain. What color is the paint? What glue? Name brand of glue. Elmers white glue. I think this is really cool. Thanks.

From memory, it was white school glue, yes, like Elmer's, and we just added food coloring until we got that nice greenish/blue tint then painted it onto the bubble wrap. Hope that helps!

I have to ask, what food colors did you use?
How long did it take to make. Trying to judge on timing since this is due January 15.

Green, I guess; it's really what effect you want. Bit of blue and yellow should make green if you can't get it by itself and just play with it, adding a drop at a time. It takes seconds to mix food coloring with glue and it dries in an hour or so. It was ten years ago now so it's hazy :-)

Oh my gosh. Ten years ago and you still have inquiries about the water. That says a lot. Many inquiring minds really liked your idea and arctic habitat project.

My mom said just go buy blue bubble wrap at the store. I lol.

I looked up polar bear arctic projects on Google. End results, I found two pictures posted of yours. I could not comment / post, so I created an account to ask you how to make the bubbled water. :-)

What a great Diorama. My son has selected the arctic for his habitat project. The water you created is really neat. We are going to try it for his project. Thanks for sharing your ideas

I tried to make this, using poster paint instead of food coloring (with the glue), and it doesn't look anything like yours. I'll have to try again. Did you pop the bubble wrap?

No, we didn't pop it and it was definitely food coloring not paint; hope that helps!

Wow... this really caught my son's eyes who is in kindergarten and he told me he'd use this as his project! Thank you for sharing. Where did you get the stuff inside of the box? I like the gestures of the polar bears and seals, but i just could not find it. Thx.

Hope he has fun with it! Gosh, it was what, 12, 15 years ago? A toy shop/hobby shop probably, or Michaels. They're sold in quite a few places.
