Last night the final part of a fic I've been reading for a very long time was posted: Of Old Mystics .
The fic, Giles/Ethan, nearly two years in the writing and of a satisfyingly epic length, is written by
mogigraphia and
wolfling and is probably one of the best known Ethan/Giles fics out there. It deserves to be.
I've read it as it's been posted, joining it part way through I think; can't remember where exactly, but fairly early on. I've always promised myself that when it was over I'd go back to the start and read it all. Just out of curiosity I clicked on the first chapter to refresh my memory of how it began and ended up reading the first chapter to the end because I couldn't stop.
Addictive, entertaining, full of plotty goodness, wonderful smut and consistent but evolving characters - it's a joy to read.
It's also full of so many other characters. A lot of 'ship fics isolate their pairing and the rest of the world seems almost incidental. 'Of Old Mystics' not only brings in familiar faces like Buffy, Willow, Dawn, and, most significantly Xander, but it treats them well, dealing with the inevitable tensions as they adjust to Ethan and Ethan with Giles with making it easy or turning anyone into a villain.
Don't need to. This fic already has villains and the worst of them isn't particularly supernatural, but she's certainly demonic ::stares at my interests which include 'hate francesca travers' and 'die francesca travers diediedie'::
Francesca, and some much nicer original characters, fill the pages of this fic, enriching it and broadening its scope. They're never allowed to detract from the main story of Ethan and Giles, but they're far from filler. You grow to care about them, human (and animal) alike.
I also fell completely for Ian. Fascinating original character whose importance and significance to the plot and the characters grows steadily rather than being shoved at the reader.
I don't want to give away plot points and, to be honest, with reading something this long, over such a long period of time, I'm fuzzy on some of the earlier ones, which I don't mind at all, as it's going to make re-reading that much more interesting - but the plot's exciting and engrossing, detailed and believable.
If you have even a glimmer of interest in this pairing and you haven't read this fic, I recommend it. If you've been waiting for it to finish to start reading it, I'll race you to the end ;-)
And to Magpie and Wolfling, and their beta readers MPoetess and Wesleysgirl, congratulations and thank you.
I loved every word.
Apart from that 'the' and that 'end' of course.
:;hugs you::
