David and I slept with the window open and woke to a sound. A sound that had me murmuring sleepily, "Is it raining?" Except it didn't sound quite like that, somehow.

It was blackbirds. Is it a murmuration of swallows? Too lazy to look it up, but that word fitted the blackbirds. It was a fluid, pattering sound and it was coming from thousands of birds, dotting the lawn, filling the trees and swooping low and fast past our window, shadows dark.

Incredible sight. The children (we had another sleepover) wanted to scare them off (tempting, as the sight of them rising up would've been spectacular, but I was firm that it would be unfair) and the cats went to the patio door and stared.

They've pretty much gone now after most likely denuding our lawn of grass seed (we haven't put any down, but it's that time of year) and I feel like Laura Ingalls Wilder when the blackbirds got into the corn.

And it's the birthday of four lovely, special people today!
