I finally watched both parts of the SG-1 S8 finale.

I cut my teeth on science fiction; read the classics like Heinlein's 'By His Bootstraps' and 'All You Zombies'; I know often time-travel doesn't make sense and just when you think it does, something occurs to you and it slips away like seaweed -- but even with that in mind I still don't get it.

Our original team (Team A) find reference to a ZPM in Ancient Egypt, go back to get it, get trapped, inadvertently change the time line. The change ripples through and hey presto, in the future, they're different.

They're Team B.

Team B find the tape Team A left, realise their time line is wrong, grab Teal'c, kill Daniel B ::pauses to breathe slowly at the death of a Daniel who was cute, brave, enthusiastic and stood up to torture and got snaked five minutes in to his Big Adventure:: and go back in time.

They meet, or would have met if three quarters of them weren't dead, Team A. I'm not sure how that's possible. It's vaguely dodgy. The fact that Jack A, Sam A and Teal'c A are dead but Daniel A is alive so there's only one of each of them is, I'm sure, pure coincidence. Or maybe not. I'm now distressed that J, S and T, the original versions, the heroes, are dead and Daniel, our Daniel whom we love, has been on his own for years mourning them and turning bitter and off hand.

Team B plus A do what needs to be done and stay in Ancient Eygypt.

In the restored time line, all of Team A, still alive, get the ZPM and the tape and never make that original journey.

Except, if they didn't, who sent them the ZPM? And isn't that our Daniel still trapped back in the past?

And, and... head explodes.

Tell me someone's worked all this out and done an essay that makes sense of it all? :;looks pleading::
