Q. How can you tell it's a S4 episode?

A. Blink and you'll miss the fact that Blair and Jim live together.

We had one loft scene in this -- where it's made clear that Jim and Blair haven't seen each other for days -- and then when Jim's being interrogated, the man says,

Aldo: Well, you and Ellison are friends. You hang out together. You go to crime scenes together.

Blair: Yeah, I'm working on my thesis. That's why we stay so close.

Aldo: It's okay. I think it's great. All's I'm saying is you see things... You hear things...

Friends? Who hang out? They've lived together for three years!

And can Jim get a clue about women from his past, in fact, women, full stop?

They're never going to be a good idea, Jim. Back away slowly and go find Blair.

He'll make it all so much better.

I also wasn't keen on this being a 'special' episode although I loved the explosion in colour during the black and white bit; very effective.
