Couldn't do these last night as David wanted to play Civ so my memory has gone fuzzy.
Spoilers, natch.
And I haven't read all the reaction but my f-list seems split on this one with a side order of universal squee that at least it's back, dammit.
I'm on the not so wild side before you go cut diving.
I laughed. Aloud. lots of times, delighted little squeaks, throwing explanations over to David who probably doesn't know what Gilmore Girls even is or why it's funny to mention it on Supernatural.
Which brings me instantly to my first point; a lot of the in jokes were ones only we'd get. Most viewers don't have an actor's IMDB profile memorised and that joke would have gone wheee over their heads unless they used to watch GG back when. Same with the 'distinctly Canadian'; it's possible to watch a show and not stick around to see it's filmed in Vancouver, yes, pretty much all of it, and assume vaguely that it's done on location.
So maybe we should be thinking, ooh, they did an episode for us! It's just like Wormhole Xtreme!
Or maybe we should think that and miss off the 'ooh' because, hey, it's just like... well.
I don't want, especially not in S2, an episode aimed at me as a fan. I want an episode of the show I'm a fan of. This is two wacky, funny shows pretty close together and I didn't much like the other one, either.
I did like (and was totally caught out by) the fake trailer. I'd already hit 'pause' as I edit commericals out and I had to do some nifty buttons pressing to catch it. That was clever and funny.
But overall, it devalued the central premise of the show for me to have an episode like this. Dean has his doofus moments, sure, and they were, technically, on vacation. Plus, they've just come off a harrowing experience; Sam was still showing it, Dean not so much. I'd have liked to think this was his way of dealing, a cover, but you know what, you've got to give me something to work with for me to think that, and I didn't get it. I just got Dean distracted from his real job by the strange and shiny. And the sexy. Gah. Hated that ending.
Why does it take Sam to spot the invocation is real? We've seen Dean do the Latin chanting plenty often enough.
Distracted.
And it's so jarring to have these episodes on a show where John died to save his sons. A show where women end up pinned to ceilings, bleeding and burning.
Supernatural's always done a good job at layering the horror with dark humour, banter and snark. I don't want to lose that, ever.
It also has the boys often deflating an urban myth with a wry insider knowledge - or the reverse.
Last night the funny was laid on with a trowel and -- I only wish I could think it was deliberate, ironic -- the plot was thin, dragged, and had holes (like the movie).
If you have to ask if it's parody or poor writing...
So I giggled, and spotted in-jokes, and all that, yes, I did... but overall, bit of a let down.
