Icon help?

Clearly my icon skills suck worse than I thought as Eleanor stared blankly at one of my new ones and had to be coached into seeing the two images of Jim ::sad pout:;

I alway bite off more than I can chew.

If anyone who CAN do icons can make a decent job of it or give me some pointers I'd be grateful because I'm still stubbornly fond of the concept of it.
