Furthermore, the same-sex male relationships portrayed in most slash stories have a use-by date: sooner or later most of the characters ‘turn’ heterosexual and get married, it apparently being beyond the ability of most slash writers to imagine anyone actually choosing a non-heterosexual identity permanently.

From an essay on fanfic/slash written by a radical feminist here

I'm seeing links to this essay all over my f-list and no wonder. It's not that some of the points she makes aren't valid or wouldn't be interesting to discuss, although she makes it clear in comments that the essay is aimed at her fellow radical feminists and that doesn't describe me. No, where she shoots herself in the foot is her refusal to budge on points like this which means the discussion gets focused on them and the rest is lost. I've been reading and writing slash for five years in, umm, about seven or eight fandoms. I read fast, I read a lot. I've NEVER seen a slash fic end this way. Ever. I do wish she'd link to some of the fics she's read that do end this way -- she says she's read many --because I'm frankly curious. Maybe it was something that happened way back when, but without links, I'm skeptical. I read it murmuring, wrong, nope, what? No! Sheesh!

God, what with this, LJ, and the e-publishing thing, I'm feeling battered.

Pour ketchup on me and maybe a light sprinkle of salt...

Anyway, Mum got back safely after her flight home, and I'm resolutely ignoring a tip of a house (they come to rip out the kitchen on Monday; most of the contents is in boxes scattered around the rest of the house) and I'm going to finish revising Wild Raspberries today and get it sent off to Torquere nice and early.

The boycott... I'm really not sure about it, which means I probably won't. I have my issues with the way all this has been handled by LJ but staying off my own LJ when I want to be on it, posting and talking to all of you, well, I'm not sure it'll achieve anything. LJ seem to be backing down on the Basic accounts, the interests are back, and, to quote Jim Ellison, quite frankly, Captain, I'm kind of tired.
