I just cleaned the top and sides of the oven before the men come with our new one and put the old one out on the sidewalk, where it will disappear in about 15 mins, if past experience is anything to go by.

Why did I feel the need to clean a broken oven just so the neighbors don't judge me, why? ::facepalm::

The new one is going to be such a step up. Double oven, convection heating, infra-red grill...

It's here though we got $300 knocked off as it was on special that day (nice break for us!).

It's going to look so shiny!

We've never had a self-cleaning one; I'm astonished at the volcano-like temperatures they go up to while they're doing it; 800 degrees. Wow.Why doesn't the oven just, I don't know, melt?

My mom got a new oven when I was in high school. We'd had it about two days, and she was heating up our hamburger buns in it. I wandered over and found this lever, which I pushed to one side and which, oddly, wouldn't push back. Nor would the oven open, despite half an hour of our best efforts. We called our neighbor, a crack electrician, and told him our oven was broken. When we described what we'd done, he couldn't stop laughing. "It's the lock for the self-cleaning feature, and now the oven won't open until it's completely cooled down. Didn't you read the manual?" (Seriously? It was an oven. How complicated could it have been? Men.) After that, my mom was afraid to use the self-cleaner, because she thought, somehow, that the oven would get locked in that position and never open again! Having said that, self-cleaning ovens are great, and they actually work better than those noxious cleaners (and WAYYY better than the eco-friendly ones).

Have fun shopping...choosing is hard. My old ones were over 25 years old!

:-) My washing machine was 25 years old when it gave up the ghost, a year or so back. When the men delivered the new one, they looked at the broken one, and one of them (an older guy) said, "That's an old model!" When I told him how long I'd had it, he shook his head and said, "This new one won't last nearly that long."

Though seriously, it's possible I'll die before it does.

Actually... with the life expectancy of modern equipment, I might. If, however, it were to last as long as the last one it would be almost certain to outlive me. Not that I intend to pop my clogs any time soon, but I have to be realistic. If
"The age of Man
Three score and ten perchance may be", well, I've already had seven trips around the sun beyond that.

The key thing is try and not do it in the summer because you're going to die from the heat. Also, you'll see it's super easy to clean afterwards: you just have to wipe the ashes with a wet sponge*. Ta-da!

*Assuming it works like the ones we have in Europe. North American appliances always look so different.

If it does that it's actually a good indicator that you should have done it sooner. If this happens too often some marks may never go away. It can be hard at first to gauge whether there are too much grease and burnt residues or not enough yet. If you have custom settings you can do it more frequently but not have it last for as long as it can (I think my oven goes by thirty-minute increments or something like that).

It's like cleaning before the maid comes over, so she won't think you're a slob. So I've heard. I'll be glad to let you know if I'm ever in the position of being able to have a maid.

I'm glad you're enjoying your new stove. I look forward to hearing about the mouthwatering holiday feasts you'll be cooking up, soon.

When my family goes out to eat, we always tidy up the table before we leave. Stack all the dishes and silverware, wipe up any mess, etc. We have a family story of when my sister was about 4, she finished her meal, picked up her plate and headed for the kitchen-because you're supposed to put your dishes in the sink after you're done, right?

I heartily appreciate anyone who waits on me or attends me in any fashion. They're there to help, but they're not servants, or trash.

I like the idea of being able to have a maid. But I think I'd be uncomfortable with anyone knowing those kinds of intimate details about me. It's...weird.

I've been browsing double oven models and look forward to your reviews especially the infrared grill. I grew up with a gas stove and have never been happy with the way electric stoves broil.

?!!! Wow! It looks as though you'd need a special degree to learn to use it! My mind boggles. ;) But, it really does look awesome. I wish you and your family many, many years of lovely meals and luscious desserts.

*twirls you*
