Last night, after much work, I tracked down a very old story I'd seen a reference to that sounded interesting, only to find the webpage had the stories on a really distracting, patterned background. Nothing daunted, I cut and pasted into Word and settled back to read with a happy sigh.
Then I saw that the author used 'cumming' and winced, jolted out of the story completely.
The devil made me do it. I have no excuse for what happened next but it was
there, in Word, and the find/replace called out to me, so I changed them all, and while I was at it, went through and gave it a quick and dirty betaing, eliminating any of my personal cannot stands like repeated use of 'the older man' and fixing some typos. Tiny stuff; nothing major.
Then I read it in one smooth, uninterrupted session and enjoyed it very much indeed.
I'll never share this copy with anyone. I'd never tell the author I did it (I'm not even going to say what fandom it is; I read in four or five, so it's a wide field). But I still felt a twinge of guilt because it wasn't up to me to change her words. Moving it to Word so I could read it without squinting; that I have no guilt over, but the editing, hmm...
So tell me; have you ever done this? How do you view it? Mortal sin or gentle hand slap required?
ETA. For the record, I'm perfectly fine with anyone doing this to one of my fics as long as they didn't do anything with it/share it, but kept it on their own computer to read. I'm possessive/protective of my stories in some ways, but this, no; edit them all you want if it means you enjoy them more.
